Wow, just read a post from this site. It sounds like he didn’t have uninsured motorist car insurance cover. How can you not feel sorry for this guy. He sounds like a reasonable, intelligent law abiding citizen. I completely agree with his comments;
- Police should randomly run checks on vehicles to check for insurance, (the cost shouldn’t outweigh the court savings) any vehicles uninsured should be taken of the road.
- Those that don’t obey the law (by not attending court as required) should be tracked down by police and be held accountable.
I was absolutely disgusted to read the writers comment that Cleo Fields (former state Sen.) actually said that “You can’t expect people to buy something they can’t afford.” Yet, you can expect people to put lives and property at risk and that’s completely fine? Huh? Somethings not making sense here!
Of course we never think we’re putting lives and property at risk when we hop in our car for a drive, but the reality is that we all make mistakes, and sometimes stuff happens that we can’t control (massive pot holes, icy roads, gigantic spiders mysteriously appearing from nowhere) that can cause drivers problems despite their best intentions. If you can’t afford insurance, please be responsible and leave your car at home.
I guess the only solution for now to avoiding this kind of situation (apart from campaigning for sensible changes to be made to the whole system!) is to tick that do you want uninsured/under-insured motorist cover? on your insurance application, it may cost you a little more but it could sure save you from a massive headache.
