If you are looking for cheap car insurance for a lady you are in luck. The insurance god has smiled on the female sex (that or we’re actually better drivers!) with many companies offering a slightly reduced premium for female drivers.

I did a simple search comparing the auto insurance premium offered to a female and a male with all the other factors left the same and I found that the average saving for being female was 3.6%. Keep in mind that this may vary depending on what area you live in and what motor vehicle you drive.

Of particular interest to me were the companies that will actually charge you MORE for being female, strange since it defies the industry norm but true. These were:
- Balboa/Meritplan
- Safeway
- Mercury
- Permanent General
- USAA
- Western General

On average these companies wanted to charge me 3.5% more than what they would charge if I was male. But, and this is a big but, these companies were generally around or significantly below the average premium price. In fact, some of the companies prepared to offer a female up to 17% discount were the most expensive.

So, overall it does help to be a lady to get cheap car insurance but shopping around and obtaining quotes from different companies is still the best way to save money.
